So on July 24th I made a blog post entitled Brian Brushwood's biggest con reveled and on July 25th +Brian Brushwood posted a link to that post on his Google Plus, Facebook, and Twitter. The following are screen shots from each site.
So now that Google Reader has been shut down and everyone has moved on and found other readers I'd like to talk about one that I've found and have come to love.
First let me say that yes I tried Feedly but I just didn't like it, it seemed slow and when I imported my Reader info some things were missing and after manually adding the missing feeds they would be gone the next time I opened up the reader. So for me Feedly is out.
Next is the Digg Reader, not being a fan of Digg and preferring Reddit I didn't try this one, I've seen a lot of positive reviews about it though. If you're a Digg user already I'd say this is probably the way to go for you.
The AOL reader....din't try it, not going to try it.
Now for the reader that I've found to be my personal favorite, CommaFeed I could go on and on about this but I will try to make this brief. The design is simple and clean, everything works flawlessly, it's open source, and there are browser extensions for Chrome, Firefox, and Opera. I honestly love the reader and I just thought I've been using it and I wanted to put the word out there since I've never seen it discussed in any way when talking about Reader alternatives. If you're still looking for a good Reader replacement I'd say check out CommaFeed.
I submit to you the reader my case for how one Brian Brushwood noted fire eater, magician, podcast host, and lover of a good con, is pulling the greatest con job of all time. I believe he is even pulling the con on himself! Recently on his podcast NSFW show with co-host Justin Robert Young on the TWiT network a video was shown from a singer who goes by the name Tomcattt. During the playing of this video it was pointed out how similar Mr. Brushwood looks to Mr. Tomcatt, the following image was taken from Google Image search and will show the similarity between these two men, yes Mr. Tomcattt does appear older but I will address this in a moment.
I've had the new Gmail tabs for a few days now and I've tried very hard to like it but I just couldn't get how it was helping me. I can't figure out how this was going to make my life better, now instead of looking at my Inbox and seeing my email, I have to click on tabs to see all my email. I have everything labeled and color coded with filters so all I have to do is look for green and I know it's important, or yellow and I know it's personal, and so on and so on, this tab thing is just stupid.
Don't even get me started on the mobile app, at the very top I see the two tabs, I click on one of them it takes me to the messages in that tab, once I'm finished I hit "back" and if I wanted to get back to that tab I have to wait until another email comes into that tab, because I can not for the life of me figure out how to get back to a tab once I've backed out of it! Maybe I'm just stupid, I'll be the first to admit I'm not a genius, but I can figure this kind of thing out most of the time but this one has got me stumped. Also I haven't had a lot of time to sit down and dig into the mobile app, most of the time I spend emailing via mobile is when I'm working so I don't have time to play with the app and figure out how to use it.
So what am I doing about all this? Well I went into my Gmail settings and turned it off, and all I can do is hope that Google won't make this mandatory. Actually I hope they give it the old "Wave, Buzz, and Reader" off with it's head that it so rightfully deserves.
I'll be honest I have not been happy with any of the Gmail updates that have come out this year, but I really hate the mobile updates. When I wake up I like to start my day by checking my email on my phone, it's a routine I had gotten into. Now I don't even bother, now that I have to tap those letter boxes next to each message to be able to select multiple messages to mass delete I'm always frustrated because if I don't tap the damn thing just right it will open the message instead of selecting it. I want simple and easy to use check boxes, not this picture or letter boxes next to each message. I love you Google but you're really starting to piss me the fuck off.
Larry Page's new Google is turning out to really suck, it's like they are trying to fix what isn't broken. Here is a tip for everyone at Google, your users aren't engineers, K.I.S.S. = Keep It Simple Stupid.
Thursday I watched Wreck-it Ralph, and while it wasn't the best Disney film I've seen it was alright. The video game idea was interesting but in the end not enough to really grab and hold me. While the graphics were great that alone wasn't enough, the story just seemed to bland even for a children's movie.
A big draw back for me was the voice actors, I really don't like John C. Reilly or his work, Sarah Silverman well....she can fall off the face of the earth right now and it would still be 100 years to late, Jack McBrayer well I've never seen anything that he's had a major role in that I enjoyed.
Kids will enjoy this film and the parents that have to watch this with their children will manage not to gag most of the time. I'd say don't bother watching this unless you need something to keep the kids silent.
This weekend I went to go see Pacific Rim, and while it wasn't the best film I've ever seen it was still very enjoyable and worth the ticket price. I was never a huge fan a Mecha and Mosters but this was just a great time and was done in such a way that really engaged me.
While I've never been a fan of most of Guillermo del Toro's work (with the exception of Hellboy & Hellboy 2) I have to say this one impressed me. Charlie Hunnam and Rinko Kikuchi really play well off each other, all the other characters help keep you engaged while not getting in the way. The dialog left a little to be desired but over all it was good enough and mercifully not to clichéd. Also the CGI was absolutely amazing, you can almost believe that the monsters and the machines were real. If you haven't seen it yet I'd say see it while it's in the theater, this is a fun one to see on the big screen.
I've had to turn off the Emergency Alert system on my phone, the damn thing was going off every 30 mins with the same message every day. I realize that I need to be aware of dangerous situations but if you keep screaming about disaster over and over, day after day, eventually even if you're right no one will listen to you. It's sad really, this was a really great idea, but once you start to abuse it, the once great thing just becomes annoying and kicked to the curb.
If you're wondering how to turn off emergency alert system on you're smart phone then here is how to go about it.
1. Open the stock messaging app.
2. Click "settings" then "emergency alerts"
3. Uncheck what you don't want.
This method didn't work for me, I have a Galaxy Nexus so maybe it's different than the carrier set up, I don't know, but the steps I took were as follows.
1. Open the stock messaging app.
2. Click "cell broadcasts"
3. Select the menu then select "settings"
4. Uncheck what you don't want.
First let me say right away that I occasionally forget to use my turn signal, most of the time it's when I'm on the back roads of my neighborhood though. Ok I'm a courier so I see a lot of traffic and one thing that drives me nuts it people changing lanes without signaling. The other maddening thing is when someone fails to use their signal right in front of a police car and the cop doesn't do anything, I mean come on at least ticket them for failure to signal!
Ok I know this is a minor issue and I shouldn't get worked up about it but I do have one area that makes me want to pull my hair out. When I get on the highway every night to go pick up my load I drive down Portage road to get onto I-77, when you past the last light before the on ramp to I-77 it's a two lane road, once past the light at third lane opens up on the right that is a Right Turn Only lane that you get into to get on the I-77 on ramp. What drives me crazy is when people change lanes from the right hand lane into the Turn Only lane without signaling but then once they are in the Turn Only lane they turn on their right turn signal!
One night a few years ago while getting gas I was talking to a cop at the pump next to me and I asked him about that, he said that you don't have to signal if your in a turn only lane. So basically these dumb-asses are breaking traffic laws by not signalling when they are supposed to but then needlessly signalling when they don't need to.
By the way, below I've included a screen capture of the location I'm talking about. You can clearly see that it's marked as a turn only lane with two other lanes beside it.
